Recruiters have backed a commitment from the home secretary to take a “fresh look” at the cap on the number of skilled workers being given visas.

On the BBC’s The Andrew Marr Show yesterday, new home secretary Sajid Javid was quizzed about the cap on Tier 2 visas. The cap was introduced by then home secretary Theresa May as a way of limiting the number of skilled workers from outside the European Uni

on who had a job offer.

“It is something that I’m taking a fresh look at,” Javid told Marr. “I know a number of my colleagues certainly want me to take a look at this, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

“And I hope to think about this more carefully and see what can be done.”

In response to Javid’s comments, NHS Employers, the government agency that acts on behalf of NHS trusts in the National Health Service in England and Wales, issued a statement from its CEO Danny Mortimer.

While welcoming the proposed review, Mortimer drew attention to the fact that many NHS Trusts have encountered problems securing certificates for doctors over the last six months.

Dr Andrew Harborne, a recruiter at Birmingham-based VIQU and himself an NHS doctor, echoed Mortimer’s sentiments. He told Recruiter he has seen at first hand how the NHS is suffering from a shortage of doctors.

“Particularly in emergency medicine or acute medicine, hospitals just haven’t been able to get people into those jobs. I do occasionally work in hospital and you can see the impact there as well.”

Harborne added the review needed to happen as the NHS is under “critical pressure” and cannot function without those middle-grade doctors.

Javid’s comments appear to confirm those made by his predecessor Amber Rudd last month.

Responding to a question raised by Recruiter at the Future of Jobs Seminar, organised by the RSE Group at Bannatyne Hotel in Hastings, former home secretary Amber Rudd said government was looking into the issue of Tier 2 visas.

The challenge has been for doctors, she added, because only some areas of doctors are on the shortage occupation lists.

“It is something the government is looking at and I think it is an incredibly important area for us to get right,” Rudd said.

Providing comment to Recruiter this morning, RSE Group MD Mandy Brook said it was pleasing to hear ministers speak about upgrading the Tier 2 system. But she added the UK currently also needs engineers, medical and IT skills in the UK.

“We deal mainly with engineering and manufacturing, and skills are hard to find; clients are more open to taking someone with the right skill set from abroad on a visa more than ever before. IT is another key area for us. Developers are in very short supply, as are IT leads with key software knowledge.

“This can only be a good move for the UK and we all know how desperately we need nurses and good doctors.”
